Static QR codes

A static QR code encodes its final destination directly — the URL, Wi-Fi credentials, or text is permanently part of the code's pattern. Once printed, it cannot be changed; the only way to redirect a static code somewhere else is to physically replace it, which is exactly the sticker-swap pattern covered in our guide to spotting a fake QR sticker.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic QR code instead encodes a short redirect URL through a QR platform's own domain. The platform stores the actual destination separately and can update it at any time — scan the same physical code today and tomorrow, and you could land somewhere completely different, with nothing about the printed code itself changing. This is what powers scan-tracking analytics and the ability to fix a typo in a destination link after printing thousands of codes.

The real security difference

This is the distinction most consumer guides skip: a dynamic code moves the attack surface from physical tampering to account compromise. With a static code, an attacker needs physical access to swap it. With a dynamic code, an attacker who compromises the QR platform account — through a weak password, phishing, or a platform-side breach — can redirect every single deployed instance of that code simultaneously, with zero physical tampering and zero visible change to the printed material.

Why this matters for businesses

Which should you use?

Static codes are simpler and have a smaller attack surface, but can't be updated or tracked. Dynamic codes offer real operational value — analytics, the ability to fix mistakes, seasonal destination changes — but require treating the platform account itself as a security-critical asset, not just an afterthought. Neither is inherently "safer" in isolation; the right choice depends on whether you need the flexibility enough to take on the account-security responsibility that comes with it.
