I'm the person who built and maintains CheckThisQR. Here's the honest story of why it exists, what it actually does, and what it doesn't.
Why I built this
I run a couple of small, free web tools as an independent side project, and I kept coming across the same pattern while researching what to build next: QR code phishing ("quishing") had gone from a fringe tactic to something government agencies were actively warning about, but the actual tools people had for checking a QR code before scanning it were thin. Most either just decode the code and stop there — showing you a link with no indication of whether it's actually dangerous — or they're paywalled, ad-heavy, or limited to a handful of free scans.
That gap seemed worth closing with something genuinely free, fast, and private: decode the code without ever uploading the image anywhere, check the destination against real threat data, and give a plain answer. No account, no scan limit, no upsell.
What we do
- Decode QR codes entirely in your browser — the image never leaves your device.
- If the code contains a web link, check that destination against Google Web Risk, a threat-intelligence database of known phishing and malware sites.
- Give you a clear, plain-language verdict, and let you decide what to do next.
What we don't do
- We don't require an account, a signup, or any personal information to use the tool.
- We don't open links automatically or take any action on your behalf.
- We don't claim a "clear" result is an absolute guarantee — see our FAQ for what a verdict does and doesn't mean.
How this site is funded
CheckThisQR is free to use and supported by advertising. There's no premium tier, no scan limit, and no paywall on the safety check itself. I'd rather run ads than put a safety tool behind a paywall.
